5 Tips On How To Write A Bulletproof Professional Bio

Writing about yourself can be hard, but coming up with a summary of who you are, what you do and what you believe is indispensable. Your professional bio is a tool that may help someone decide to follow you, invite you to speak, or more seriously consider doing business with you.

The simple template below is suitable for a LinkedIn profile, websites, blogs, resumes or team member descriptions. Additional information can be added to any section, however, less than 10 sentences is ideal. For social media profiles, keep it even shorter with just the first two lines.

1. Paint the big picture.

The first sentence is a summary, or elevator pitch, that distills the essential benefit of working with you. It should read something like this: [Name] is a [title] who works with [who you help] to [what you do for them].

2. Reveal your why.

The second sentence helps people see you as a real person, showing the inspiration behind what you do. [First name] [knows/believes] [what you know/what inspires what you do].

3. Offer evidence.

Third, list a few big wins or social proof to illustrate your experience and reinforce your credibility. Use actual numbers if you have them. [First name] has [landed/secured/garnered/produced] [insert compelling wins and proofs].

4. Advertise honors.

Boost credibility further by sharing relevant certifications, trainings or awards you have received in recognition of your efforts. [First name] is a [trained/certified] [insert relevant trainings, awards, etc.].

5. Highlight education.

For a complete picture and strong finish. [First name] holds a [degree] in [area of study] from [university].

Make sure to rework your bio from time to time as your skillset, awards and interests grow.
